We were out shopping and I saw a necklace I liked. I tried it on and asked Ry if daddy should buy it for me for Christmas.
Ry: "No, I think you should just wear it right now."
Man, I love this kid! Why wait till Christmas? Daddy can get me something else :)

We had just received a plate of Christmas goodies from some friends.
Ry: "Do we get to eat them before Christmas?"
Me: "Yeah, they made us some treats."
Ry: "And we don't have to wait? We can eat them now?"

Poor Rylan was so scared that Santa was coming into our house. Usually on Christmas Eve kids get excited when Santa's coming and it's good motivation to get in bed (although it may take awhile to actually fall asleep!) Not Ry. You really could see fear on his face.
Ry: "Mom, if you see Santa, will you make sure he doesn't come into my room?"

Ry: "If I have a bad dream and come into your room, what will Santa do to me?"

I was wrapped up in a blanket and when Ry saw me he said "Mom you look like a hot dog. A hot dog in a bun."
I laughed and laughed and that encouraged him to keep saying it over and over. :)

Ry: "I'm good at sleeping while I walk."
Me: "Why are you walking when you sleep?"
Ry: "I just do and I'm good at it cause I don't bump into anything."
I tried to get more info from him because I'm not really sure what he was talking about. But, it made me wonder if all these nights he's been coming into our room if he's still asleep. But if he's sleeping then how does he know he's good at it? The other night he woke up around 10:00pm so Kevin went to check on him. He went back to his bed but then he started laughing. It kinda creeped Kevin out a bit, but now I'm pretty sure Ry was just sleeping the whole time!

Aquarium
With Christmas over but Kevin home from work, we were looking for something to do. Kevin had his mind set on going up to Sandy so his parents could watch our boys while we went to the movie. I was a bit nervous since we had a big snowstorm yesterday but I just had to go along with Kev and his plans. We decided we'd go up early so we could go to the aquarium. Ry and I have passes (Asher's still Free!) but Kevin's never been before so we thought it would be fun.
Getting on the freeway here in Spanish Fork started my major worries. I even commented out loud how the roads were icy and Kev better be safe. I tried to just relax but it was too hard! When we got to Orem the truck in front of us put his brakes on so Kevin put his brakes on but we kept going forward. I was making some nervous almost-a-scream and Kev was clutching the steering wheel. Seriously, just in time the truck took his brakes off and inched forward giving us more room. My heart was racing and I couldn't breathe and I just wanted to throw up. We were so lucky we were safe. I told Kevin I wanted to turn around and go home but, like I said, he had his mind set. He promised to drive a bit slower the rest of the way.
Once we got into Sandy a car behind us raced passed us with no fear of the icy roads. Kevin made a comment about the car and then said "I guess that was me 30 minutes ago." I was so glad we made it there safely.
And the aquarium was fun--like always! Ry touched the sting ray for the first time and said "It's all slimy and stuff." He usually just sticks his hand in the water but daddy helped him to be brave! The penguins were out of the water just walking around. I like to see them hopping in and out of the water and I was sad for Kev that he didn't get to see those funny little things at their finest! The coolest thing was they had the eel hooked up to a Christmas tree. Every time the eel sent out his electric energy it would light up the Christmas tree. There were different colored lights and depending on how much energy the eel was giving out, the lights would flash their different colors at different speeds. So Cool!!
While at the Doyle's we purchased our tickets online for 'Tron' in 3D at the IMAX. I honestly didn't really care to see this movie but again, I went along with Kevin's plans. But I admit, I enjoyed it! (Of course the popcorn helped :)
We were happy to get back to hear our boys were angels. Asher was drinking his chocolate milk with his crackers in his cup (disgusting). They had done puzzles and played with toys and watched part of a Veggie Tales Christmas movie that Ry ended up borrowing. They had a great time!
Our drive home was much better. We stopped off for dinner at Chili's (love their chips and salsa...really the only reason we go there!) and finally made it home. It was slow going but I didn't mind one bit.
So it ended up being a great day!!

Let it Snow!
We've had a couple great snowstorms this month that have brought some fun our way. One morning (Dec 20th) Kevin shoveled the driveway before he left for work. Later that day while Asher napped Rylan and I went out to shovel the driveway again. It had been snowing all morning so we had our work cut out for us. Rylan used to use his rake because he didn't have a snow shovel...yet. He asked for one for Christmas and as much as I wanted to just pull it out early for him to have fun with, we made him wait.
Look at Rylan's creation! He told me he was going to make another rake and I didn't know what that meant until he showed me the print in the snow. He asked me to get the camera, so I did and I took a picture. I showed him the picture and he asked "Why am I not in it?" Good question! Here's a picture with him and his two rakes!
This little boy loves to have snowball fights...what boy doesn't? This snow was such great packing snow that you could just pick it up in a mound (like Rylan) and there's your snowball!
We got out the ruler to measure how deep the snow was on our grass. I tried to measure (the right way) and Rylan insisted he knew a better way. Not sure he got an accurate reading on the depth of the snow!
Kevin and Rylan worked hard building a snowman. It's actually more of a huge mound of snow, but stick arms, a scarf, and a top hat on a mound of snow and it turns into a snowman! Sadly I didn't get a picture of the final product. A huge windstorm came in later that night and blew the top hat away (it was Kevin's homemade top hat from our night of bad caroling). I asked Kev to go out and get my scarf off the snowman before it blew away, and in his haste, he yanked off that scarf which decapitated the snowman!

I went outside (yes, in my pajamas--but at least I got on some boots and a coat!) to take pictures of the boys having fun in the snow. I realize that since I'm the creator of this blog I don't have to put such ridiculous pictures of myself on here. But it was a fun day!

* Graceling--Had a hard time getting into it, but maybe because it was the end of the year--crazy time! But I ended up loving it!
* Recovering Charles--Easy read. Good enough.
* A Thousand Splendid Suns--Book club. Not quite as disturbing as Kite Runner. Worth reading.
* Mockingjay--I liked it but then I didn't. Actually, being the last book of the series, she ended it really, the best way to end it. Great series.
* Winter Garden--This was good. A bit sad but it had a good ending.
* The Wednesday Wars--Book club. Great book.
* The Dark Divine--Entertaining!
* Hattie Big Sky--I enjoyed this book. And I loved the name Hattie :)
* Ella Minnow Pea--Fun to read. Creative idea for a story.
* The Thirteenth Tale--Really liked this. It has one idea in it throughout the book that's a tad creepy. Great book, though.
* Fire Study--The last of the series. Loved these books.
* Clear As The Moon--The last (6th) of The Great and Terrible series. Are you prepared for the end of the world? I still think about this book and I get nervous knowing I'm not ready!!
* The Help--Awesome. Definitely recommended.
* The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society--Book club book. Really liked it but it didn't live up to they hype I'd heard.
* From the End of Heaven--From The Great and Terrible series. Again, great series. I think I started this series last year so it took me awhile to get through it. Really really liked them though.
* Magic Study--Second book in the series. I read the first (Poison Study) last year and really liked it. I was glad to get back to it!
* A Train to Potevka--Book club. Interesting to read about a real life spy.
* Pride and Prejudice--Book club. Why did it take book club to finally get me to read this? I'd seriously started this book several times in the past and could never get into it. But this time I continued on (for book club!) and completely fell in love with it (of course)!!
* The Book Thief--Book club. And probably one of my favorite books of the year.
* Ender's Game--Book club. One of Kevin's favorite books ever. I was glad to finally read it after hearing so much about it from the Doyle fam over the years. I really liked it.
* Fury and Light--Great and Terrible book. Yep, it was a good one!
* A Woman in Jerusalem--Book club. Had so much potential but fell short. Very short. Disappointing.

My Boys
Just some pictures of my boys from today I wanted to post. I love these boys!
I know I shouldn't let him sit on the couch like this, but this is where Rylan sits the majority of the time to watch his shows.
This train table (and trains, of course) has been the most played with toy in our house. Hands down. Daily the boys are building train tracks, tearing them down, fighting over trains, and having fun together!

Sick Boy
Asher started getting a bit sick on Christmas Day and the days that followed have not been good for him. He's had a runny nose and a cough so he's not sleeping well and he just isn't himself. This morning he fell asleep around 10:00am while watching t.v. I had a pizza lunch and planning session with the YW at the church at 11:00am so I thought I'd take my boys for a bite to eat, help in planning the activities (since I'm the secretary I felt it important to be there) and get home as quickly as possible. Well, everyone was just enjoying themselves so it took a bit longer than I had initially thought. By 1:00 Asher was whiny and ready to go home. I held him while we finished up our planning and my poor baby fell asleep right in my arms. I enjoyed it while it lasted because that is so not like Asher. If he's not in his own bed, he usually will not go to sleep. We had walked to the church so I put him in the stroller to walk home and he slept most of the way. It took us almost a full hour because Ry was on his scooter and he'd stop every few feet to check out some patch of snow or a cool stick.
Later on this afternoon Asher fell asleep by the stairs. I guess he just didn't have the energy to go up all those stairs to get in his own bed! I scooped him up and tucked him in his crib where he slept for several hours.
I always feel so sad for my boys when they're not feeling well. I hope this passes soon.

Christmas Day
Lucky for me and Kev, our boys are not early risers. It was about 8:00am when Rylan came into our room and Asher woke up just after. Or wait, maybe Asher woke up first and then Rylan woke up. Well, either way, it doesn't matter!
Kevin always goes downstairs first to turn on the Christmas tree lights and some Christmas music. With the video camera ready the boys are able to make their way downstairs to see what Santa brought. First stop--Asher's goods. He continually said he wanted a "truck" for Christmas and that's what Santa brought. He was more excited about the basketball hoop though, also left by Santa. He immediately grabbed the basketball and started shooting hoops. I think within one hour he had polished off all the candy in his stocking!
Rylan meandered over to his stocking where he saw a snow shovel and garbage truck. I'm not sure how excited he was, but that's what he asked Santa for!
Time to open presents! Asher started out and we rotated through all of us, each taking our turns. Asher was excited about Stitch and his new Thomas train with some more tracks!
Not the best picture of Asher, but I think he's so cute holding that big 'ol Stitch! He doesn't even know who Stitch is, but when we saw him at the Disney store, Asher wouldn't put him down.
Rylan got his scooter that he's been asking for as well as some magnetic shapes that he was surprised to get. Ry often goes home teaching with Kevin and at one house they introduced these magnets to Rylan. He had so much fun Kevin insisted we get them for Ry for Christmas--Perfect! After all his presents were unwrapped I felt like my little Ry Ry was a bit disappointed. I mentioned it to Kevin so he asked Rylan if he got everything he wanted for Christmas. "Well, I wanted the Thomas and Friends Fog Cars." It's true, he had specifically asked Santa for them. We tried to explain that sometimes Santa doesn't bring us everything we ask for but Santa is very smart and he'll make sure we get the toys we'll have fun with.
I got some new gym shoes and socks, a necklace, and slippers. We had gone to RC Willey the week before and bought a freezer which would be delivered the Tuesday after Christmas. Yea!

Kevin got a drill--because I'm always embarrassed that we have my dad's drill more often then he does. Kevin was so excited about it that it's still in it's packaging in the garage! He'll appreciate it when he needs it :) He also got some new church shoes that he picked out and ordered and an Apple TV. A few weeks before Christmas he had said several times something along these lines: "Hey, ummm, I was thinking that if you aren't going to get me the Apple TV for Christmas I'm just gonna buy it right now." Or, "If you do get the Apple TV for me, just remember to also buy an HDMI cable." So, it was no surprise when he opened that gift!
After opening presents, I made some easy breakfast burritos while Kevin put together Ry's scooter. Kevin and I had a few moments of worry feeling like we didn't get our boys enough, that maybe we should have also given Rylan that car transporter, or maybe...Silly thoughts because it all turned out well and between all the gift exchanges we had our boys definitely got enough for Christmas. We ate, lounged around, played with our new toys, and seriously had an incredibly wonderful relaxing day!
We were meeting up with mi familia at Tami's casa for our own little 'Feliz Navidad' Christmas Mexican fiesta. So I spent some time in the afternoon prepping my food contributions. We finally showered and got ready, took our annual Christmas day family picture by the Christmas tree, and headed over to Tami's for a super fun night.
We dined on Mexican food, opened presents from grandma and grandpa, played games, and even got some time on the Kinect--so. much. fun!
Rylan was first and opened up the Thomas and Friends Fog Cars he wanted. Yea!! I guess Santa really does know what he's doing!
Asher was excited to just be opening another present! Grandma and Grandpa gave him a remote control car that all the cousins wanted to play with! Asher has had lots of fun with it here at home, driving it in the kitchen and knocking my feet while I'm trying to cook dinner :) My parents gave me and Kev a gift certificate to the movies (Wahooey!!) and a calendar. We're all set for 2011!

Charlie has always dreamed of getting his very own piggie in a teacup. It's a Christmas wish come true!

Christmas Eve
What's the absolute best way to start the day of Christmas Eve? Celebrating my mom's birthday at Ihop, of course! This has become a tradition that we all look forward to, and, even though having your birthday on December 24th may not be ideal, at least we can still have fun! I didn't end up with great pictures, but I do have pictures of great people :) And since I can't have a post without a bajillion pictures, here are a few pics from breakfast. (But why don't I even have a picture of my beautiful mom??)
After breakfast Kevin suggested we venture out to the mall. What? Yeah, I know. We didn't have anything we had to buy but decided to spend some time enjoying the last day of the mad rush of holiday shoppers. We weren't there long but I did leave with a little bracelet! On our way home I asked Rylan if we should make some cookies for Santa. "Nah, let's just make some for ourselves" was his response. I decided Santa had a big breakfast and so we didn't really need cookies at our house anyways :)
We lounged around for the afternoon and then headed to my mom's for some soup, birthday cake and ice cream. Tami and I both thought it was silly that the birthday girl was making her own dinner and birthday cake, but she insisted. Well, Okay!
I love the partially eaten cake :)
Can this boy get any sillier?
Home we went to get ready for Santa. We started getting the boys in bed and then I realized they didn't open their Christmas Eve gift! When Ry was a baby I read an interview with an author (it was a male author, and one that I like, but I don't remember who!) and he said one of his favorite Christmas traditions growing up (and one he's done with his own kids) is to open a book on Christmas Eve. I thought that was kinda fun so we've enjoyed it for the last few years. Then we can read those new books before bed! This year Rylan got 'Knuffle Bunny Free'. I ordered it from Scholastic before reading it, and it's a little bit grown up for him. But he was very excited and we've read it over and over. We love Knuffle Bunny!
Rylan was so scared of Santa coming to our house that he had a hard time going to sleep. He was worried Santa was going to go into his room and sneak around our house. Here are a couple things he said:
Ry: "Mom, if you see Santa, will you make sure he doesn't come into my room?"
And to Kev...
Ry: "If I have a bad dream and come into your room, what will Santa do to me?"
I don't know where he got this fear but it made me a little sad. Hopefully next year he will be excited for Santa to come and it will be from all the excitement, rather than fear, that will keep him awake!
