We left Thursday afternoon to head to Duck Creek. Between Rylan and I we had lots of bathroom breaks and stops and the drive took us longer than anticipated. But we made it and were welcomed by my dad and the Holman clan. My mom was on her way and made it in the dark. We were all ready for loads of fun, food, talk, reading and relaxation!
We seriously lounged around all day on Friday after sleeping in. Well, Kevin let me sleep in after he got up with Asher. Asher had a bit of a stuffy nose and he didn't sleep very well. But he was happy as could be when he woke up and he was ready to play--even though no one else was awake! Anyways, we played lots of games (mostly Blokus and Rage) while the kids ran around and entertained each other.
Brooklyn is Asher's best friend and he never let her out of his sight. Maybe I should pay her after babysitting my kid all weekend!
We took naps, watched tv, talked, and of course, played on the ipods (iTouches or iPhones). Whether it was watching someone else play, or each kid having their own, I think the ipods were used non-stop!
Saturday we headed down to Zions for a few hikes and a picnic lunch. Rylan rode with the Holmans and Kev, Asher, and I rode with my parents. Asher loved sitting in the middle of the back seat of my dad's truck! It was a nice drive through some small towns (including one with a sign that said "Home of the Ho-made pie"...mom and I laughed about that. Dad wanted to stop.) We were thrilled to get to Zions to find out it was free that week! Hooray! It was also crazy busy, but that's okay. Our drive through the park was gorgeous. Asher especially loved the tunnels and wanted to go through them again and again!
The Holman's found us a great parking spot and off we went to the Emerald Pools. Somehow Tami was carrying Asher and she later passed him off to my mom and dad. It's great being pregnant :) Rylan said his legs were too tired and he needed Kevin to carry him. Rylan has this thing about tired legs. We keep trying to get him to work out his legs so they get stronger, but I think really it's just an easy excuse to get a shoulder ride. And Kevin gave in! He made a deal...Kevin carried him on the uphills and Ry had to walk on the downhill. So, it worked out.
We took another hike up to a waterfall. It was a pretty steep hike, but short, and Rylan walked up and down the whole way! (Well, he was running down and about 3/4 of the way down he tripped...too close to the edge which scared me. I ran down and sat down next to him until Kevin got there to pick him up. Then I think Kevin carried him the rest of the way.) We had fun getting sprinkled on by the waterfall and really, just being out in nature!
We were all just about ready for a late lunch so we sat underneath two large trees that occasionally dropped little caterpillars on us (and even in our pickle jar--Gross!) Other than that it was a nice lunch and then it was time to pack up and head out.
Okay, funny story. My dad had some Fruit Striped Gum that he had handed out to the kids. We were on the shuttle and I was lucky enough to be sitting by Mykenna. She had her gum wrapper and read the instructions for the tattoo. Well, the instructions started on #3 where it said to apply to wet surface. So she put it on her tongue and followed instruction #4 to press for 15 seconds. Afterwards she showed us all her tongue tattoo and we all commented on how cool it was they had a tattoo on their gum wrappers for tongues. So then a few seconds later Mykenna notices, on a different part of the wrapper, instructions #1 and #2 where you are told to apply hand lotion and then the tattoo on your hand. What? It's not a tongue tattoo? All Mykenna said was "Oops" and I laughed so hard I had tears!
As soon as we got in the truck to leave Asher was again excited to go through the tunnels and our drive back was nice and quick. And what did we do once we got back to the cabin? More games of course! We played and talked and ate and watched tv, ending the night with a Toy Story marathon.
Sunday morning was another casual, laid back morning. My parents were the first to pack up and leave (about noonish?) and after the rest of us got packed up we decided to play a game of Beans. Perfect ending to a perfect weekend!
I tried to sleep on our way home but the boys wouldn't let me. And then when I finally did fall asleep Kevin swerved off the road (I still don't know why) and woke me up by driving on those bumps on the side of the road. That scared me enough to keep me awake for the rest of the drive. I read a lot of my book (My Name is Asher Lev) while Kev listened to his book and we were home before 6:30. Since Asher hadn't taken a nap all weekend and had late nights every night, we decided an early bedtime would be good. By 7:45 the boys were asleep and they didn't wake up until 7:30 (Ry) and 8:30 (Asher) Monday morning!
